The Saxophone has been a part of me for most
of my life and is how I praise my Lord and Savior, thanking Him for what
He's given to me..
It started in
my family long before I was born (and is continuing on through one of my
sons). My
dad's mother played in an all-woman's band which was quite unusual for the
early 1900s. But I think that the most unusual thing about them was when they
traveled to Washington D.C. and played for
President Warren G. Harding!
I've played
the alto since the 5th grade doubling on the baritone during junior and
senior high school. After starting college, I put it away for almost 20 years due to frequent
moves along with a diminished desire. But then the Lord put me
in a church for a few years where I was fortunate enough to know a
saxophonist in the US Navy Band, John Pominville. The Lord used his playing
as a testimony to me of
what I needed to be doing with the talent He had
given me. So when we subsequently moved to the Boston area, I volunteered to join
the worship team of our new church. They graciously accepted me and though it was slow
going at first (lots and lots of missed notes and squeaks!), I kept at it
and the Lord honored my renewed dedication with a much improved ability.
This included being able to "play by ear" whereas before I always had to
have music. Of course I wouldn't attempt to play a symphonic piece this way, but the Lord provides for whatever H e wants me to do.
So if you are ever around Overland Park, KS on a Sunday,
I encourage you to come to Faith Chapel for a morning or evening service (or
both!) and join in worshipping the Lord with us. And we encourage you to use
your God-given instruments of your voice and hands!
